An Escalator Ride

We saw the coloured posters all around us
We didn't have to look, they came and found us
Such wondrous things you'll be a part of
The nation's winners you'll be in the heart of
A world of choices is before you
No-one who's worth their salt will ignore you
This is the only chance we give you
So step right up, come on

Riding on upwards smiling through the gate
Wave to all the people who were just too late
Do they really envy us that much ?
Do they think this escalator's out of touch
Now we realise what is it we've done
We travel upwards sacrificing fun
But it's much too late to change our minds
There is only one way off

We see the glossy brochures, old school ties
But it's only one step off a pack of lies
If you can out-do them with P.R.
You will get an office job and company car
Or if you can still stand what they taught
You can be a teacher in the last resort
Someone has to close the vicious circle
Someone to shepherd others

That Vital Something

When a first impression makes me look again
Someone passes by me every now and then
Sometime quite by chance, catch a sideways glance
Hear a rumour from a close or distant friend
Strange coincidences when she walks past me yet again
Good luck only goes so far now she is drinking in the bar
She is unaware of me, like the people on T.V.
Audience she can never know, the actress cannot watch the show

Many men admire, girls in magazines
Paper pin-up girls or T.V. program queens
Action not required; passively inspired
They will never meet the woman of their dreams
Photographs can never show, if a girl is nice to know
Beauty may come over well but that can't cast a lasting spell
Even if she turns you on, love will seldom last for long
Something she just can't disguise is something in her smile and eyes

So I'm thinking of her almost every day
I'll contrive a meeting, find something to say
Now I'm in her room, gone is all my gloom
Sparkling something touch me, take me far away
I can see that glint of joy, nothing ever could destroy
Even when she's feeling down her smile seldom fades to frown
I could never keep her heart, that was obvious from the start
She was born to brightly shine for everybody's joy and mine

Going through the Motions

We only met just the other day
But I knew my feelings for you were here to stay
I can see our minds both work the same way
I want to get to know you, what do you say

A thing like this should not be rushed
There's so much 'bout each other that we feel we must discuss
It's wonderful the way I feel our growing love and trust
It's nowhere near the time or place to give in to lust

I used to have an image of a girl
I'd meet and fall in love with in an ideal world
You're not a bit like she was and it's you that I prefer
I'd rather walk alone with you than make love to her

I'm sure we've both found a peace of mind
We used to think nobody was exactly of our kind
I'm lucky that you only took twenty years to find
Now I don't give a damn about the years I've left behind

Anne Boleyn

Oh Anne, Oh Anne, Why is the Queen of England under house arrest ?
Oh Anne, Oh Anne, Why is it you not Henry that they all detest ?
Remember well your favourite the musician
Who they tortured with your brother
Made him say he was your lover
Anne can you tell me do you hear their screams ?
Or are you so caught up in your morbid dreams
Of what they have got in store for you
And of what dreadful lies will become true

Oh Anne, Oh Anne, Remember how it was back in the early days ?
Oh Anne, Oh Anne, You used to flirt and tease and bathe in Henry's gaze
You sensed infatuation and you used it well
Knew you could have anything
if you could keep him in your spell
As mistress you'd never have been seen
So you made Henry have you crowned his queen
Cast aside loyal wife and shun the Pope
He left England's catholics without hope

Oh Anne, Oh Anne, You weren't to blame your unborn babies often died
Oh Anne, Oh Anne, Your daughter sees rejection in her father's eyes
You knew how badly Henry had to have a son
But you couldn't give him one
Uneasiness has just begun
Your influence then began to wane
As Henry looked for his son to Jane
The arguments reached a fever pitch
When Henry said I have been bewitched
